Volunteer Positions and Job Descriptions

Café (Monday – Friday)

 

Before Café opens (8:30 -10 a.m.)

• help set up snacks and drinks

• help prepare hot lunches (Wednesday and Thursday)

• help unload food deliveries

• wash dishes

​

During Café hours (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

• greet and serve guests

• replenish drink and snack supplies

• wipe tables, straighten chairs, sweep if needed

• other tasks as needed

• track guests

​

After Café closes (2 p.m.)

• clean tables

• sweep/wash floor

• dismantle drink machines

• wash dishes

• dispose of trash

​

Qualifications

• at least 18 years of age

• friendly disposition

• ability to follow instructions

• sensitivity to people in need

                                   

                       

Tutoring for Children (Monday and Wednesday)

​

When

• after school (3 – 4:30 p.m., times vary)

​

Where

• Deo Gratias tutoring center, 15865 East Seven Mile Road, Detroit

​

What

• work one-on-one with a student (Grades 1-8) for one hour

• assist in developing language (reading and writing) skills and/or Math skills

• lessons provided

 

Qualifications

• at least 18 years of age

• ability to commit to consistent attendance

• enjoy working with children

• sensitivity to struggling students

• ability to follow a lesson plan with flexibility

• teaching or tutoring experience preferred but not required

 

Tutoring for Adults (times and days vary)
 

• work one-on-one with adult student for one hour

• assist in developing language (reading and writing) and/or Math skills

•  lessons provided

• schedules vary depending on availability of tutor and student

 

Qualifications

• at least 18 years of age

• ability to commit to consistent attendance

• friendly, patient, compassionate disposition

• sensitivity to students who have struggled with school

• ability to follow a lesson plan; able to adapt to immediate circumstances

• teaching or tutoring experience preferred but not required

 

 

Food Pantry

 

Pantry Days: Tuesday and Friday

 

Before Pantry opens (9 – 10 a.m.)

• help set up fresh produce section

• stock shelves and refrigerator/freezer with incoming deliveries

• prepare shopping bags

• become familiar with food choices and item limits (if any)

During Pantry hours (10 a.m. – 2 p.m.)

• greet guests, help guests choose food, bagging items as they are selected, take bags to weigh station or

• work at weigh station, tracking food selected

​

After Pantry closes (2 p.m.)

• help with tidy-up

​

Non-Pantry Days: Monday and Thursday

​

• restock shelves

• prepare emergency food bags

• Thursday only:  pick up fresh produce (after 1 p.m.) from store and deliver to Deo Gratias

​

Qualifications:

• at least 18 years of age

• physical strength (ability to lift 10+ lbs)

• friendly disposition

• tact

• ability to work with a team

​

General Assistance (days and times vary)

​

• pick up and deliver donations

• help unload deliveries

• organize donations, including food, household and hygiene supplies, and books

• sort book donations

• prepare donated items for distribution (package or repackage, arrange, etc.)

• help with indoor cleaning and seasonal decorating

• assist with outdoor maintenance and gardening

• clerical work (data entry, donor acknowledgements, prepare flyers and mailings, etc.)

• assist with fundraising efforts, including event planning
